General Surgery Course (Using a Distance Education Mode) in Impact
1: Product: 7 additional general surgeon graduates for the 3 million
population in Western Mindanao in 1997 – increasing the total number of
trained general surgeons from 3 to 10 for the entire region at that time. Impact
2: Impetus for Philippine College of Surgeons’ accreditation of the general
surgery program of ZCMC in 1997 under Dr. Alex Cerrillo which as of 2003, had
produced 3 board certified graduates. Impact
3: The program has been considered a prototype / pioneer / forerunner of
distance education in surgery and medicine in the Philippines. See publications in UP Manila Journal and
Education for Health journal (international journal) Impact
4: The project was accepted as a thesis for RJOSON’s Master of Science in
Clinical Medicine (General Surgery) in 1997. |

and Neck Surgical Oncology Fellowship Impact
1: At the rate of one graduate a year, as of 2002, product: 11 graduates
distributed throughout the country (one in Baguio, one in Naga, one in Davao,
one in Cagayan de Oro, one with MCU, one with UST, one with Jose Reyes
Memorial Hospital, two with PGH.).
The only head and neck surgical oncology fellowship in the Philippines
as of 2003. Impact
2: Accepted and trained an ENT graduate (Dr. Randy Canal) – the first and a
historic act of removing barrier between ENTs and General Surgeons. |

Consultant Helped
established ZMSFI in 1994; its Master in Health Profession Education and its
dual MD-MPH degree. Impact
1: Product: pioneer in innovative problem-based, competency-based, and
community-based medical curriculum in the Philippines which was adopted by
Southwestern University College of Medicine and Bicol Christian College of
Medicine. Produced graduates who are
practicing in these regions (many of them as municipal health officers). Impact
2: Product: ZMSF graduates with dual degree: MD-MPH (the first of its kind in
the Philippines) Impact
3: Product: the second health institution in the country offering Master in
Health Profession Education. As of
2000, about 8 faculty of ZMSF have MHPEd. |
